Scout vs QuantConnect: Choosing an AI Backtesting Workflow

Scout vs QuantConnect for algorithmic trading: how an AI terminal assistant that writes and backtests Python strategies compares with a code-first quant platform.

By Polarline Markets team

Scout and QuantConnect both help you turn a trading idea into tested code, but they start from different places. This post explains how Scout works so you can decide which workflow fits you. For QuantConnect's current features and pricing, check its own documentation.

The short version

  • QuantConnect is a code-first algorithmic trading platform built around its open-source LEAN engine, which supports Python and C#. You write the algorithm against the framework.
  • Scout is an AI assistant. You describe an idea in plain English; Scout writes a complete Python strategy, backtests it against historical data, and helps you refine it turn by turn.

Where the code comes from

With a framework, you write the strategy yourself. With Scout, an AI model writes the first version and you review it. Every new Scout strategy follows the Shape-C strategy contract: a Strategy class with on_bar, an injected broker, and explicit rules that prevent lookahead bias and unrealistic fills. The generated Python is open and readable, so you can inspect, edit, and keep it.

Backtesting

Scout's engine_v2 backtester reports 60+ metrics across eight categories. Walk-forward tests, parameter sweeps, and Monte Carlo runs are built in. Results are saved as a JSON report next to each strategy version in its algo workspace.

Where it runs and which model you use

The Scout CLI is open source and runs in your terminal on macOS and Linux. You bring your own model key for Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, or a local model (see BYOK). If you want a browser workspace instead, Scout Cloud offers shared research sessions.

Brokers

Broker connections in Scout are optional. The brokerages guide covers Alpaca, Binance, and Interactive Brokers. CLI credentials are stored on your machine.

Which one fits

  • You want to write every line against an established framework: a code-first platform like QuantConnect.
  • You want to describe an idea and get reviewable Python plus a full backtest report from your terminal: Scout.

Try Scout

The Free plan includes the open-source CLI, unlimited local strategies and backtests, and your own model key. Start with the install guide.
