The Scout CLI: An Open-Source AI Trading CLI
The Scout CLI is an open-source AI trading assistant for your terminal: describe a strategy, get Python code, and backtest it locally with your own model key.
By Polarline Markets team
The Scout CLI is Polarline Markets' open-source AI trading assistant for the terminal. You describe an idea in plain English; Scout writes a complete Python strategy, backtests it against historical data, and helps you refine it.
Install
The curl installer downloads a native binary and does not need Node.js. It runs on macOS and Linux.
curl -fsSL https://www.polarline.io/cli/install | bash finny
The public npm package is the alternative: npm i -g finny. Full steps are in the install guide.
What it does
- Three modes. Build, Research, and Chat (see agent modes).
- Strategy code you own. Generated strategies follow the Shape-C contract, with rules that prevent lookahead bias. Built-in templates give the model a starting point.
- Backtesting. The engine_v2 backtester reports 60+ metrics, with walk-forward tests, parameter sweeps, and Monte Carlo.
- Research subagents. A data extractor, news researcher, and regime briefs (see research subagents).
- Your model, your key. Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, or a local model (see BYOK).
- Optional brokers. Alpaca, Binance, and Interactive Brokers, with CLI credentials stored on your machine (see brokerages).
Pricing
The Free plan is $0: the open-source CLI, unlimited local strategies and backtests, and your own model key. Paid plans add Scout Research access, scheduled watchers, and cloud-hosted live runs. See pricing.
Source code
The CLI source is on GitHub.
